It’s time to shake off the (some) winter layers

Breathe new life into your bedroom. Transitioning into spring you will want to think about creating a lighter, fresher, and more comfortable sleep space that reflects a change in season. Think; fabric with open weaves, crisp feeling sheets and minimal weight.

1. Swap out the cosy

It is the season for a lightweight duvet with the option of extra blankets.

Choose a duvet with a lower tog rating (between 4.5 and 7.5) to stay comfortable as temperatures rise. Look for breathable bedding produced from natural fibres and fills like down and cotton, these natural materials wick away moisture and regulate body temperature while you rest.

If you have a Granny Goose Four Seasons duvet, it is time to unclip the summer weight section, pack it away and just use the autumn weight duvet. Be sure air out the summer side before rolling it and storing it for high summer.

Look out for a summer weight duvet for the hottest months, especially if you live in an area with high seasonality.

2. Layer lightly (but thoughtfully).

Spring weather can still be unpredictable. Add a light quilt, cotton blanket, or textured throw at the foot of the bed or folded on a nearby chair, within reach, for flexible layering that adds texture and a touch of cosy without heaviness.

You could also have your Granny Goose Four Seasons Duvet, unclipped and dressed separately to make it easy to pull back the covers if the evening is warm.

3. A spring clean for your bedding essentials.

A clean bed not only looks better, it improves sleep quality. And as we come out of winter and move into spring, it is the perfect time to do a full bedding refresh. Wash all your bedding in hot water (60 Degrees will sort out the allergens), including pillows and mattress protectors. Make sure they are 100% dry before using them again. You can do this by using a long, low heat cycle on the tumble drier.

Does your white linen need a makeover? Pause your washing cycle mid-wash and leave it overnight with a little extra soap or fabric brightener. Continue the cycle in the morning and dry in full sun.

Rotate or flip your mattress and sprinkle it with bicarbonate of soda to neutralise odours then vacuum it up after 30 minutes.

4. Reasons you'll love percale

Percale weave is ideal for summer sleep because of its breathability, crisp feel, and lightweight structure - a smart choice, especially in warmer climates like South Africa.

1. Highly Breathable

Percale is woven in a tight, one-over-one-under pattern using cotton or cotton blends. This structure allows air to flow more freely, preventing heat and moisture from getting trapped against your skin.

2. Crisp, cool feel

Percale sheets have a matte finish and a cool, crisp hand-feel, similar to a freshly ironed button-up shirt. That cool touch makes a big difference when it’s hot and stuffy at night. Unlike sateen, which can feel heavier and silkier, percale feels dry and fresh, the perfect choice for hot sleepers or humid nights.

3. Moisture-wicking & quick-drying

Cotton percale sheets naturally absorb moisture (like sweat) and dry quickly, which helps regulate your body temperature and keeps your sheets feeling fresher for longer.

4. Lightweight and less clingy

Percale won’t wrap around your body like heavier weaves tend to. This promotes more airflow as you move, helping prevent overheating.

5. Long lasting comfort

Despite its lightness, percale is durable and gets softer with every wash, making it a long-lasting summer staple. A 200–400 thread count is ideal for warm-weather use, any higher can compromise breathability.

5. Consider allergy-friendly bedding materials

As spring approaches, so plants begin to bloom, then add in some heat and humidity and our allergies flare up. Consider replacing your winter bedding with duvets and pillows that are naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal and inhospitable for house dust mites and other allergens.

Bamboo, cotton and down are all super breathable and wick away moisture making them the perfect materials for sensitive sleepers.

Regularly vacuum your mattress and warm wash your linen to reduce the possibility of sensitivities.
